Tribe comes up short at Bridgeport in season finale

BRIDGEPORT – The Chesaning varsity gridders suffered a heartbreaking 20-19 loss to host Bridgeport in the regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 19.

The Bearcats led 6-0 after the first quarter, and with an 8-7 advantage in the second led 14-7 at the intermission. The Indians added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth. The Bearcats also scored in the final frame.

In the second quarter, quarterback Cole Higley connected with Anthony Aguado on a 38 yard TD pass. Tyler Willing booted the PAT kick for the Indians.

In the fourth quarter, Higley connected with Jacob Turnwald on an eight-yard TD strike. The two-point conversion was no good. Later in the quarter, the duo hooked up again on a four-yard touchdown. The two-point try again failed.

Higley finished the night with 11 of 22 passing for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Turnwald had five receptions for 42 yards and two scores. Aguado had two receptions for 57 yards and a score. Trent Devereaux had two catches for 64 yards. Nick Fowler had two receptions for 11 yards.

On defense, Zach Matsumiya and Garrett Quackenbush each had 13 tackles, with one for a loss. Turnwald had 12 tackles. Higley and Nick Vargas had eight tackles apiece. Collin Rodriguez had seven tackles and a forced fumble. Fowler had seven tackles and two for a loss. Devereaux had three tackles and a fumble recovery. Aguado also had three tackles. Ryleigh Qualls had two tackles and a tackle for a loss. Brenden Quackenbush, Tyler Good and Nate Fowler each had a tackle.

Turnwald had five punts for 252 yards, including a long of 81 yards, and three punts inside the 20-yard line.

The Indians finish the season with a 3-6 record.
