New Lothrop spikers win at Perry invite, beat Chesaning

Photo by Keith Salisbury New Lothrop’s varsity volleyball team won the Silver Bracket of the 16-team Perry Invitational on Saturday, October 13 and then followed with a league win over Chesaning last Tuesday.

Rondalee Beardslee’s troops split with three teams in pool play before marching through the elimination rounds to a first-place finish.

The Lady Hornets beat Montabella in the quarters, edged past host Perry in the semis and polished off Oakland Christian in the title bout, 25-23, 25-16.

Kailey Wendling dished out 110 assists, came up with 45 digs and went 63 of 70 serving with 13 aces on the day to lead the way.

Alyssa Schnell and Jaren Bishop came up with 77 and 71 digs, respectively, and Katie Bitterman slammed 34 kills for NL. Anna Johnson passed at an 84% clip and had 25 digs to go with 39 of 43 serving.

New Lothrop hosted Chesaning last Tuesday on Parents/Senior Night and beat the Lady Indians, 25-12, 25-13, 25-4 to finish its league campaign with a 6-1 MMAC mark and a second-place finish in the new league.

Senior outside hitter Jaren Bishop broke the school record for kills in a match with 28 in the three-game match, breaking the previous record of 27 kills by Monica Confer in 2009.

Bishop also had 11 digs, 2 blocks and was 12 for 12 serving with a pair of aces.

Wendling dished out 31 assists, had 6 digs and was 14/17 serving with an ace, Schnell registered a dozen digs and was 18/18 serving with 3 aces, Bitterman drove down 8 kills and Olivia Moore turned in 4 blocks for NL, which is now 26-12-5 overall.
