TRAVERSE CITY – New Lothrop suffered its first loss of the season last Friday night against Traverse City St. Francis, 35-14, despite out-gaining the host Gladiators in total offense.

The Hornets scored first on a 55-yard run by Avery Moore to take a 6-0 lead with 8:53 left in the opening quarter, but TC St. Francis responded with three straight touchdowns on runs of 30, 12 and 11 yards to take a 22-6 lead with 8:50 remaining in the first half.

Moore connected with Aidan Harrison for a 70-yard scoring pass with 3:40 left in the second and then ran in the two-point conversion to help NL close to within 22-14 at halftime.

St. Francis gained some vital breathing room right at the start of the second half when Danny Passinault, who had scored on two rushing touchdowns in the first half, returned the second-half kick-off 91 yards for six points to quickly expand the lead to 28-14.

Neither team was able to find the end zone for the rest of the contest until Passinault scored for the fourth time of the evening with 4:24 to go in the game on an 18-yard run.

The Hornets amassed 343 yards as they ran for 147 and passed for 196 more. Moore completed 12 of 24 passes with one interception. He connected with Harrison three times for 88 yards and a score and found Will Muron four times, worth 30 yards. Julius Garza caught one aerial covering 58 yards.

Passinault accounted for 103 of the Gladiators’ 265 yards rushing. St. Francis completed just one pass and gained no yardage through the air.

Chandler Saunders and Austin Wendling were the leading tacklers for the Hornets with 6.5 stops each. Garza had six tackles.

The loss brings New Lothrop’s regular season to an end with an 8-1 overall record as the Hornets await Sunday night’s pairings announcements for the post-season play-offs.
