GOVERNMENT MEETINGS

CHESANING VILLAGE PLANNING COMMISSION will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the council chambers, 218 N. Front St.

CLUBS AND CIVIC GROUPS

CHESANING LIONS CLUB members will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the Lions Hall, 17200 Corunna Road, Chesaning.

MONTROSE AMERICAN LEGION POST #367 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Montrose Senior Citizen Center, 200 Alfred St. Any veteran who wishes to learn more about joining the legion may attend.

CHESANING AREA TASK FORCE will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the Chesaning Chamber of Commerce office. The Task Force encourages visitors and welcomes requests to be placed on the agenda. Anyone interested in serving on the Task Force board in the future or seeking information about Task Force can call (989) 845-6061.

• The SHIAWASSEE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY will meet on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at the museum and archives building, at the corner of M-52 and Wilkinson Road in Owosso. The program will be on painting quilt blocks on barns. Hugh and Kitch Rinehart, of Vicksburg, will explain the process and then take the audience on the Vicksburg Quilt Trail of 45 miles and 24 barns. The building is handicapped accessible, and light refreshments will be served.

BAZAARS AND CRAFT SHOWS

• The St. Charles District Library FALL BOOK AND BAKE SALE with quilt raffle will be on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 pm. There will be a variety of books for $3 per bag. There will be a variety of baked goods for sale as well. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. For more information, call (989) 865-9451.

• The Bannister ZCBJ HOLIDAY BAZAAR will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 401 E. Main St., Bannister. The lodge will be selling Czech bakery items (kolache, rohlicky, nut rolls and poppy seed rolls) and yeast dumplings, 100th anniversary cook books, Czech garnet jewelry, lodge history books, Czech culture items and baking sheets. Table renters will offer a wide variety of items, including woodworking, needlework, jewelry, cutlery,

baked goods, jam, jellies, and syrups, holiday decorations and more. A luncheon of homemade soup, sloppy joes, sandwiches and pies will also be available. Advance orders for Czech yeast dumpling can be made by calling (989) 862-5591. A few tables are still available for rent, eight feet for $12, and 15 feet for $20. * Vendors are needed for the Chesaning American Legion TOYS FOR KIDS PROJECT on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 15053 McKeighan Road, Chesaning. • There will be a CRAFTS BAZAAR on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1629 W. Brady Road, Chesaning. There will be lots of vendors with a wide variety of craft items as well as baked goods and used books.

• Vendors are wanted for a FALL CRAFT BAZAAR to be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oakley Village Hall, 205 Parshall St., Oakley. The event is being organized by the Oakley Community Church Ladies’ Ministry. Tables are $15. • Vendors are wanted for the United Methodist Women’s CHRISTMAS BAZAAR on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Charles United Methodist Church, 301 W. Belle Ave., St. Charles. VENDORS ARE WANTED for a Christmas bazaar to be held Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Montrose United Methodist Church, 158 E. State St. (M-57), Montrose. Call Jackie at (810) 639-6812 for further information.

VENDORS ARE WANTED for the first annual craft show to be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Charles District Library, 132 S. Saginaw St., St. Charles. The cost is $20 per table. To register, call (989) 865-9371.

FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP

• The Burt United Methodist Church, 12799 Nichols Road, will be hosting an all-you-can-eat SWISS STEAK SUPPER on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12, free for ages 4 and under.

• The First United Methodist Church of New Lothrop, 7495 Orchard St., will host its annual all-you-can-eat HARVEST DINNER on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The meal will include Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, squash, green beans, cole slaw, rolls, pies and beverages. The cost is $10 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under.

• The Chesaning Knights of Columbus take-out FISH FRIES are on Fridays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the KC Hall, 9171 Deitering Road. The menu includes cod, cole slaw, roll and

French fries. The cost is $11 for take-out dinners,

CHURCHES

• The First United Methodist Church of New Lothrop will host STORY HOUR for young children on Monday, Oct. 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. There will be story time, fun, crafts and snacks. HEALTH AND SAFETY

• Memorial Healthcare will be hosting a free seminar for anyone 18 or older on ADVANCE DIRECTIVES AND ADVANCED CARE PLANNING on Monday, Nov. 5 from 2-4 p.m. in Memorial’s North Auditorium located at 826 W. King St., Owosso. Refreshments will be served. Speakers for the event include Cindy Reichert-Brooks, nurse practitioner; Joelle McGuire, MSW, social worker; Tom Kalina, MSW, social worker; and attorney Barbara BakerOmerod. Attendees are encouraged to bring a family member or friend to support the completion of their advanced care directives at this event. This family or friend should be the person the patient selects to make care decisions for them when they cannot. Registration is preferred, and can be made by calling (989) 721-9366

• Memorial Healthcare Registered Dietitian, Kerri Smith, is hosting a free informative GROCERY STORE TOUR at VG’s Food Center on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. This event will teach participants about healthy eating throughout the holiday season. Participants will meet at the VG’s Food Center vestibule at 1341 N. M-52, Owosso. The tour should take no longer than 90 minutes. Participants are also asked to refrain from shopping during the tour and to wear comfortable shoes. Pre-registration is required by Monday, Nov. 5, by calling the Community Wellness, Nutrition and Diabetes Center at (989) 729-4700. Spaces are limited.

ODDS AND ENDS

• New Lothrop VFW Post 6579 Auxiliary will host a BUS TRIP to the Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek on Monday, Oct. 29. The bus will pick up people at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 400 N. Saginaw St., Montrose, at 8:30 a.m. and will return at approximately 6 p.m. The cost is $40 per person, of which each will receive $20 for casino play and $5 for food on their card. • The ANNUAL DINNER MEETING of the Shiawassee Agricultural Society is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 8. Community members are invited to show their support for the Shiawassee County Fair, its board of directors and the youth of the county by becoming a member of the Society. Yearly dues are $6 per person or $10 for a couple. Membership must be paid into the fair office by Wednesday, Oct. 31 to be eligible to vote. This year’s annual meeting will be held at the Durand VFW Hall, 932 N. Saginaw St. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the business meeting with awards at 7 p.m. followed by a reverse raffle. Dinner reservations are $15 per person and must be made no later than Wednesday, Nov. 21 in to the fair office. This year’s reverse raffle has only 200 tickets available. These tickets are $100 each and may be purchased by individuals or groups. Tickets are available for purchase through board members or at the fair office.

SENIOR CITIZENS

• The Chesaning Young at Heart Club is sponsoring a TURKEYVILLE BUS TRIP on Saturday, Nov. 10. The group will see a show entitled “Christmas Again.” Interested persons can sign up at the Chesaning Senior Center, 218 Church St. To prevent cancellation, at least 40 reservations are required. SUPPORT GROUPS

• The MID-MICHIGAN CHAPTER OF HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA meets on the fourth Monday of each month, excluding holidays, at 7 p.m. in Curtiss Hall, Room C129 at Saginaw Valley State University, 7400 Bay Road, University Center. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

• The next Respite Volunteers of SHIAWASSEE VOLUNTEER TRAINING WORKSHOP will be Thursday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, in the Father Whelan Room (lower level), 111 N. Howell St. Owosso. Lunch is provided by persons from the congregation who are Respite Volunteers. The training workshop is an opportunity to learn more about the program, and volunteer opportunities that are available. If this training date & location is not convenient, individualized training can be set up at the office in Owosso. King St. in Owosso. The main entrance is on the parking lot side. Adults with health and medical challenges, and their family caregivers may also contact Respite Volunteers to request an evaluation to receive services.

SCHOOLS

MONTROSE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 for a regular meeting in the Kuehn-Haven Middle School media center, 303 Ray St., Montrose.
