Chalk Talk

By Anthony Berthiaume
Superintendent New Lothrop Area Schools

This edition of Chalk Talk is an excellent opportunity for me to update our parents, students, staff, and the community on the events of our district. Obviously, the first few weeks of school have brought nervousness and excitement for our students. Prior to the start of school, we held two events: our kindergarten 12 Open Houses and Seventh Grade/New Student Orientation. Our goal was to reduce the anxiety that students and parents may have been feeling. Hopefully, each of these events brought you and your child a sense of ease and comfort knowing they will be in a district focused on high expectations (academic and behavioral), safety, and creating a warm and productive learning environment for all students.

These first weeks of school have also been filled with many student activities and sporting events. In addition, Homecoming is scheduled for the week of Sept. 24-28. This will be a great week to show our Hornet “pride” throughout our schools and community. Our pre-kindergarten 12 staff and students are looking forward to a fun-packed week of activities including dress-up days, Powder-puff game, pep assemblies, and a Homecoming parade which will lead up to our Homecoming football game on Friday, Sept. 28 starting at 7 p.m. against Durand High School. I would like to thank our kindergarten 12 student council officers and advisors, Michelle Perry, Denelle Klein, and Barb Andres for their time and effort in preparation to make this year’s Homecoming a huge success!

I would like to thank the community members and staff who attended our open forum on Sept. 5 regarding a potential bond proposal to the community in May 2019. During the event we reviewed our recently completed facility audit, sought input, and provided an overview of the bond process. Receiving input from community members is crucial to the direction we take as a district. Community input will help ensure that we are aligned to the community needs. We will be hosting additional community forums in the coming months. We will advertise these events through our district website, Facebook, SchoolMessenger, my Chalk Talks, and various newspapers outlets.

We, as a district, must be able to provide a safe, productive, and positive learning environment for our students. The initiative that we are taking on together will allow the district to carry on our tradition of offering a quality education that is supported by a caring community. If you would like more information or would like to provide any input regarding a potential bond, please contact me at (810) 638-5091.

Another priority of the district is to continue our communication with all stakeholders by providing a District Facebook page to observe and celebrate our students and staff. Our Facebook page can be located at: https:// www.facebook.com/New-Lothrop-Area-Public- Schools-108538526495807/. Information posted will include links to positive stories involving our students and the district, photos and information regarding school-related events, and recognition of students and staff and their accomplishments.

Our pre-kindergarten-12 team anticipates another successful school year. We look forward to working with you and your child. It is our goal to keep the high standards that New Lothrop has set forth and focus on preparing students for their future successes. We, as educators, are very humbled with the trust you place in our staff and take great pride in making sure we offer the best education possible in a safe and productive learning environment. Thank you in advance for your continued support and dedication towards our students and school district. I am looking forward to an exciting and successful 2018-2019 school year and beyond. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, my office phone number is (810) 638-5091.
