Hornet gridders cruise past Byron, 48-21

BYRON – New Lothrop continued its gridiron dominance on Friday, Sept. 7 with a 48-21 pasting of host Byron.

The Hornets built a 42-7 lead by the half in a game that was essentially over in the first quarter.

New Lothrop scored at 10:02 on a 48 yard run by Will Muron. Quarterback Avery Moore ran in the two-point conversion for an early 8-0 lead.

With 4:42 left in the first quarter, Moore connected with Aidan Harrison on a 45 yard TD pass. Moore’s pass to Ean Gauthier for the two-point conversion was no good, making it 14-0.

Then with 3:18 left in the first, Moore hooked up with Harrison again, this time for a 39 yard TD strike. Harrison’s two-point run was good, making it 22-0.

Still in the first, with 1:50 left, Byron punted to the New Lothrop 30 yard line. Muron took the punt and returned it 70 yards for the TD. Moore’s conversion run failed.

Byron got on the board at 7:26 of the second quarter on a three-yard run by quarterback Kyle Hulett. The PAT kick was good, cutting the lead to 28-7.

Less than two minutes later, at 5:45 of the second, Moore broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown run for the Hornets. Muron’s two-point run failed, making it 34-7.

With just 46 seconds left till the half, Moore connected with Harrison again, this time for 24 yards and the score. Moore’s conversion run made it 42-7 at the half.

The Eagles got one back with 3:19 left in the third on an eight-yard run by Jack Selon. The two-point run was no good, making it 42-13.

Muron struck again for the Hornets at the 5:14 mark of the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run. Tate Steinborn’s PAT kick was no good, giving New Lothrop the 48-13 lead.

With 3:15 left to play, Hulett connected with Logan Zakoor for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The two-point run was good for the 48-21 final.

The Hornets finished 294 yards rushing in 27 attempts, and another 98 yards on 6 of 12 passing for 392 yards of total offense.

Moore went 6 of 12 passing for 98 yards and three TDs. He also had nine carries for 130 yards and a touchdown. Muron added 123 yards on 10 attempts with two TDs.

Harrison had four catches for 108 yards and three touchdowns.

The Hornet defense held Byron to 261 yards of total offense. The Eagles had 193 rushing in 53 attempts, and another 68 yards on 2 of 6 passing.

Austin Wendling led the Hornet defense with 11 solo tackles and four assists. Austin Barnette finished with seven solos and three assists. Garrett Birchmeier had six solos and two assists. Chandler Saunders had three solos and three assists.

The Hornets travel to Montrose this Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
