CHESANING TWP. – During its Thursday, Aug. 2 meeting, the Chesaning Township Board had an official opening of the two bids received for the columbarium project at Wildwood Cemetery. The township board accepted the low bid of $49,500 from Heritage Monuments of Chesaning. It includes a cement foundation that would accommodate eight granite columbarium units. Each unit would have 48 niches, each niche capable of holding two sets of burial ashes. A 30-foot tall flag pole would be placed in the center, along with two park benches.

The township board had the choice of installing four or eight columbarium units, although the cement foundation would accommodate eight. The board agreed to move forward on a plan with four units. Heritage plans to begin laying the foundation this fall.

Clerk Fran Kukulis said, “We budgeted far lower than the actual cost of the project.” She explained that the township had budgeted $75,000 for the cemetery this year, including maintenance. The board carried $25,000 over from last year specifically for the columbarium.

Under the Heritage Monuments’ proposal, the township would be required to pay a 25 percent down payment at designated stages of the project, with 50 percent upon completion. The proposal fit well with the township’s budget structure, which pushes the bulk of the cost into the next fiscal year.

Heritage Monument owners Tyler McGeehan and Jeremy McAllister attended the meeting to address any questions and thanked the board.

From the audience, township resident Jennie Carlton told the board, “These guys do great work.”

After the Heritage Monuments bid was accepted, Corrin said the township would finally be moving forward on the columbarium after years of discussion. The idea to install a columbarium was first discussed at the Chesaning Township Board’s February 2013 meeting.
