Lady Indians cruise to D-3 district softball title

Photo by Keith Salisbury NEW LOTHROP – Two lopsided wins on Saturday, June 2 earned Chesaning’s varsity softball team a Division 3 district crown at New Lothrop.

The Lady Indians clobbered Montrose, taking just three innings to register a 23-1 mercy win over the Lady Rams, then polished off host New Lothrop in the title match with a five-inning mercy win, 12-1.

“We played well on offense and on defense all day long and we received great pitching from Taylor Gross,” assessed CHS coach Ron Poyer.

Every starter had at least one hit in the romp over Montrose as Erica Barta led the way with a triple, two doubles and a single. Sidnee Struck and Skylar Walser contributed three hits each as the Tribe amassed 21 hits. Gross gave up one unearned run and three hits while striking out eight.

Gross yielded one run and three hits in her five innings of work in the circle.

Barta blasted a three-run homer in the second and added a double later in the contest. Liz Coon stroked a triple and two singles while Walser had a single and a three-bagger.

The Lady Indians advanced to yesterday’s regional tournament hosted by Millington where they were scheduled to face Byron in the semifinals.
