Medical marijuana operation looks to add greenhouses

CHESANING – On April 3, Nicholas Weisenberger and Jason Steele of Country Boy Farms, LLC, requested the Chesaning Village Council’s approval to add four 3,000 square foot greenhouses behind the medical marijuana facility at 1117 N. Main St.

Village administrator Troy Feltman explained that the applicant wants approval for an addition to the original site plan. He explained that normally, this would go right back to the planning commission for site plan review. However, since it is an expansion of the medical marijuana permit approved by the council in February, Feltman wanted the council’s input.

Feltman explained, “Country Boy Farms was approved for a license for a single class C grow facility and a license for processing. The greenhouse addition is more of a methodology of the growing issue. The site will still be limited to 1,500 plants. The processing license was part of the original submittal to the village and this greenhouse approach does not have any bearing on that operation.”

Weisenberger told the council that their architect recommended adding the greenhouses. Village council members asked about the materials used to build the greenhouses. Weisenberger talked about using a polycarbonate plastic material that would be blacked out to block out the light.

Sedlar asked how they plan to control the odor.

Steele replied, “Scrubbers.”

Weisenberger pointed out that the facility is located next to the sewage plant.

“That would be my biggest concern, the odor,” Sedlar said.

Steele said the facility will be locked down tightly with security guards on duty.

Feltman asked the council, “Is this use allowed? Are you willing to consider this (addition)?”

He also asked council members if they have any requirements as far as certain building materials, lighting, security and so forth.

Sedlar said, “I don’t have a problem with it personally.”

Councilman Trent Vondrasek said he wants to see it, before he says yes or no, including a side profile of the building. He said, “The main concerns for people attending these meetings have been smell and handling the runoff.”

Sedlar told the applicants, “Security, odor control, lighting, what the building is made of (these are among the council’s concerns). This probably isn’t going to be the only property that’s going to be asking about greenhouses. As far as (this) development, I’m not opposed to it.”

Feltman said additional parking spaces will be required under the ordinance, due to the additional square footage.

With the council’s general consensus of acceptance, the site plan expansion goes back to the planning commission for evaluation. In the meantime, the planning commission has already approved the plans for the structure along the front of the property.
