Bulldog golfers heading for States

PERRY – St. Charles’ varsity boys’ golf team is moving on to the State Finals after qualifying at Perry’s Glenbrier GC last Wednesday in a regional event where every shot counted.

The Bulldogs finished in a three-way tie for second place with Williamston and Lake Fenton as each of the three teams posted a 328 team tally. Lansing Catholic finished first with a 309.

Two of the three second-place teams could go on to the next step as only three schools are allowed to advance. The tiebreaker was the fifth-man score. James Barber’s 91 was good enough to give STC a second-place finish.

“Today was a team effort if there ever was one and it was certainly a lesson in ‘every shot counts’”, commented STC mentor Roger Pumford.

Dustin Pumford and Hunter Koch fired solid 80s while Stefan Beeler and Jeff Wachowicz carded 84s.

Montrose’s Alex Zilinski (82), Mike Rumsey (83) and Noah Vandefifer (97) along with Chesaning’s Ben Kasik (100) missed the cut as individuals and will not advance. Zilinski was just four shots away from qualifying.

Meanwhile, St. Charles’ team will head to Grand Valley State University and the Meadows GC for state final competition this Friday and Saturday.

“Our guys are humbled and excited to be in the finals, but we will not go in simply happy to be there,” concluded Coach Pumford. “It will be tough to win, but with solid efforts, it is possible. I am very proud of this team.”
