(Courtesy Photo) Emily Cherry is a young St. Charles student who was honored last Friday for a highly-praised essay she recently wrote.

The seventh grader at Anna M. Thurston Middle School wrote an essay along with the rest of the seventh graders about Americanism through the Military Order of Purple Heart. Emily won first place for the school’s contest. Her work was then submitted to the state contest, where she won first place there as well.

The young writer received a plaque and monetary award on Friday, May 30 during the school’s annual awards assembly. Her award was presented by veteran Lloyd Clark, of St. Charles.

Cherry’s essay spoke about the importance of being an American and what the United States flag means.
