Tribe gridders clip Bluejays, 19-14

SHEPHERD – The Indian varsity football team picked up a much-needed win Friday night over host Shepherd, 19-14.

After an almost scoreless first half, the Bluejays scored first with 55 seconds left in the second quarter on a 26 yard run. The PAT kick made it 7-0.

Chesaning roared right back, though, scoring on a 64 yard pass from Thomast Stasa to Levi McKay with no time left on the clock. Deshaun Young kicked the PAT to knot it at 7-7 going into the intermission.

At 5:11 of the third, the Tribe took the lead on a 25 yard TD run by Young. The PAT was no good, though.

The Jays grabbed the lead back at 4:47 of the third on a 67 yard run. Their PAT gave them a 14-13 lead.

A.J. Nietling capped the scoring for the Indians, however, at 1:16 of the third on a four yard run. The PAT was no good.

The Indians rushed for 226 yards on 36 carries. Stasa was 7 of 13 passing for another 131 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. The Tribe finished with 357 yards of total offense.

Young rushed for 111 yards in 13 attempts. Stasa had 82 yards in 15 carries. Nietling added 33 yards in eight trips.

McKay hauled in two catches for 70 yards and a score. Nietling had three receptions for 20 yards.

On defense, Derrick Bocek had eight tackles. Young had six tackles with a quarterback sack, a caused fumble and a fumble recovery. Jeremy Hafner had nine tackles and a fumble recovery.

“This was a big win for us,” admitted Chesaning coach Steve Tithof. “The kids played hard on both sides of the ball tonight. We didn't make critical mistakes at crucial times. We kind of got over that hill tonight.”

Tithof added, “Our defense really played well. We were able to get off the field on fourth down, and we didn't give up the big plays like we have all season.”

The Indians improve to 2-6 on the year with the win. They close out the season this Friday by playing host to Williamston. Game time is 7 p.m. at Orra C. Morningstar Stadium.
