Confer gives Hornets 28-26 win over Detroit Allen Academy

MONTROSE — In a game that didn’t feature a lot of scoring by either team, Monica Confer came up with a big deuce at the end of the game to give the New Lothrop varsity girls basketball team a 28-26 quarterfinals win over Detroit Allen Academy.

The Lady Hornets led 18- 11 at the intermission and appeared to be in control of the game, but the Wildcats made adjustments in the second half, out-scoring the Hornets 7-2 in the third to claw their way back into the game. Both teams scored eight in the final frame.

After see-saw leads in the fourth quarter, the Hornets tied the game with about two minutes left to play. The Wildcats bled the clock, playing for the final shot, but with about 10 seconds left, the Hornets got a steal and Confer ended up with the ball. At the other end of the court, she made the gamewinning lay-up, sending her team to their third straight state semifinals game.

The Hornets finished the night shooting 12 of 35 from the floor and 2 of 3 from the line. Normally deadly from behind the arc, New Lothrop shot an uncharacteristically 2 of 10 from three-point land.

Confer led the Hornets with 14 points and nine rebounds. Amber Sammons added six with five rebounds. Jade Gerber and Morgan Wendling added three points apiece.

Allen Academy was led by Tiffanie Adams with 10 points. Nina Cook and Tiara Malone chipped in six points each.

The win put the Hornets in a semifinal game against Hamady at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center on Thursday.
